Week On, Week Off Custody Schedule (Alternating Weeks)
With alternating weeks (also called week on, week off or a 7-7 schedule), the kids live a full week in one home and the next week in the other. There is one handoff a week, usually on a Friday after school or on Sunday evening.

How it works
- Parent A has seven nights in a row, then Parent B has seven nights.
- The handoff happens on the same weekday every week.
- Over two weeks each parent has seven nights.
Who it tends to suit
- Teenagers and older kids, who often prefer fewer moves.
- Parents who live farther apart, or whose work suits a week-on, week-off rhythm.
- High-conflict situations: one handoff a week means less contact.
What to plan for
- A full week is a long time away from a parent for young children.
- Everything the kids need for a week has to move with them.

- Some families add a dinner or one overnight mid-week with the other parent.
- A Friday handoff at school pickup avoids a face-to-face exchange.
